What is the RNC?
The Republican National Convention is where delegates from each state vote to decide who will be the national candidate for the upcoming election. This is also where the running mate is chosen.
03
Why is the RNC important?
Winning the RNC means that you have the backing of the party before the national election in November. You need this backing to be declared the Republican candidate on the ballot paper.
02
What happens?
Delegates vote in primary elections before coming to the convention. They read out their state's results and declare themselves for each candidate. Whoever collects the most wins!
04
Who were the candidates?
The 1976 RNC was very important as incumbent President Gerald Ford had to fight the challenger, Californian Ronald Reagan. Reagan had the support of the right-wing members, while Ford was more centrist.
